What is Christian Education?

What is Christian Education?

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” – Luke 2:52.

Every school’s goal is to educate children about the world, life, and its purpose. Christian education focuses more on teaching children about

  • How God created the world?
  • How to find meaning and purpose for our life through God’s Will?
  • And how each learning area depends upon our faith.

Christian education is about believing that only by understanding God, His work, and His words can we learn the truth and love others around us. Christian education isn’t about having an additional religious class besides the normal classes; it’s about integrating a biblical worldview into every study area. Students may learn in a science class about how God’s handiwork exists in the natural laws and world’s design. During a physics lesson, they may learn examples like Christ both on and off-field. Christian education is about helping children understand that following God isn’t restricted to one area of life.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31.

For example, parents who take their children to the church are unknowingly inferring that they have to learn about God only once a week. With Christian education, children will fathom how God not only exists on a Sunday but is constantly at work every day. A Christian school builds on what’s taught at home and in church. It enables children to build their faith outside of the church and home and establish a solid spiritual foundation later in their lives. Christian education strives to kindle a desire in students to learn about the Bible and God and prepares them to follow Christ even after they leave school.

Benefits of Christian Education

Instruct the wise, and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous, and they will add to their learning.” – Proverbs 9:9.

Whatever we do professionally or personally, we do so for God’s glory. We need to integrate Christian principles from the very beginning and navigate it ethically for the rest of our lives. Students who are taught to be Christ’s followers eventually have a greater goal than simply gaining knowledge or landing a high-paying job. They wish to equip themselves with the tools required for evaluating the world through a biblical lens.

1. Christian Education Approaches Every Discipline from a Christ-Centered, Biblical Worldview

Christian education enables students to evaluate every problem, lecture, and class through a biblical lens. It provides them with an opportunity to see how every life aspect, from history and art to biology and chemistry, is woven into God’s plan for His people. Christian education integrates faith with academics, providing biblical-based answers to skeptical questions.

Many secular education systems teach a narrow view of certain disciplines like science. They don’t acknowledge scientific evidence of a creator or teach the universe’s origin from the religious perspective. On the contrary, Christian education teaches all available theories, allowing students to evaluate the evidence. It broadens their horizons by helping them to establish critical thinking skills and subject matter expertise.

We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ.” – Colossians 1:28 (NASB)

What you absorb, study, and learn impacts your worldview. Christian education presents academics through faith and Bible’s teachings to equip you with skills, values, and knowledge needed to thrive in the future.

2.  Christian Education Encourages Students in Their Faith While Promoting Academic Excellence

The Great Commission says,

Go and make disciples of all nations . . . teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.” – Matthew 28:19-20.

According to a study, 70% of students give up on faith during their first year in college. One of the main reasons is because “The church as a whole has had no way of intentionally connecting students to Christian communities before they begin college.”

College is a time in life that wrestles your questions, fears, and doubts regarding living a Christian life. While secular colleges ignore these questions, Christian education allows us to address them in a thoughtful and safe environment.

Christian education allows students to think critically from evolution to the end of life. It applies biblical truth to worldly issues and helps students engage with their culture. Christian colleges also ensure students learn from older and wiser believers. In addition, many Christian colleges also provide prayer walks, small groups, dorm Bible studies, and chapel services to help students grow in their faith.

3.  Christian Education Provides High-Quality Education and Can be More Affordable than Secular Counterparts

Christian education refers to quality academics. Not only does it have a faculty that is dedicated to hard work and integrity, but it offers smaller class sizes than secular counterparts. It allows a greater teacher/student engagement and is more affordable than traditional education.

For many Christian students, college is more than just getting a degree. It’s an opportunity to grow spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.
