What is a Christian Mission?

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” – 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

What is a Christian Mission?

Christianity isn’t all about performing rituals, following the rules and regulations, or regularly attending church. A Christian mission is to form a bond with Jesus Christ, know him to reach God, and help others learn His message.

What is a Christian Mission?

We exist to worship God, praise His glory, and love Him above everything else. To accomplish the Christian mission, all believers must submit to His command. Continue reading to find out everything about the Christian mission.

1. Christian Mission is Obeying Christ

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” – Matthew 28:19–20.

After Jesus’ death, the Lord commanded all believers to share the gospel message to all mankind. Our mission is to obey God’s call, so He can reward us in heaven. Instead of fulfilling our mission out of duty, we should try accomplishing it with love. Christ’s love compels us to do well and seek eternal happiness. He died for us, so we should live for him instead of ourselves. God gave us the ministry of reconciliation through Christ, telling us to become righteous by obeying Christ.

God could convert everyone using a blinding light and the voice of Christ as He did with the apostle Paul. Instead, He gives Christians the mission of reconciliation. He works through us, calling sinners to turn to Christ in repentance and faith.” – Acts 1:8–9

2. Christian Mission is Sharing Christ

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit,” – Matthew 28:19 (ESV)

Our mission is to declare that Christ is our savior and the only way to live an abundant life. It’s also our mission to reach out to all nations and spread Christ’s message. Christian mission isn’t restricted to international ministry. While we should support those who spread the message on foreign soil, it’s also our mission to share Christ in our homeland, in our community, and among our friends and family.

Our mission doesn’t end with salvation, for we are here to make disciples and not immature believers. Therefore, the Christian mission involves both evangelism and discipleship.

3. Christian Missions is Relying on Christ

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28 (ESV).

Sharing the Gospel message is our mission, but we can’t do it alone. The power of fulfilling a Christian mission comes from the Lord. He gives us the desire, strength, and wisdom to witness! Through our witness, God works faith and repentance in our hearts.

Ultimately, the Christian mission is God’s work. Christians are responsible for understanding the word of God, sharing it with the world, and creating a strong relationship with Christ. Having such a bond with Christ will protect us from hypocrisy.

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to answer everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander”- 1 Peter 3:15–16.

Jesus told us that our missions would accompany suffering. However, God will use even our suffering to guide us to the right path. Therefore, Christians must rely on Christ and work towards accomplishing their Christian mission.

4. We Fulfill the Christian Mission by Walking Consistently as Citizens of Another Country

But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.” – Philippians 3:20-21.

No matter where we live geographically, we should consider ourselves citizens of heaven. All believers should live differently than citizens of the earth. Our lives are worthy of Christ’s gospel. Our mission is to please the heavenly emperor and live by his word.

All Christians need to conform their character to Christ. Even though we reside in this world, our primary citizenship is in the heavens. Believers can blend in with worldly matters, but their heavenly citizenship should remain distinct.

5. Our Mission is to Transform

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2 (NIV).

Believing in God is not enough if we don’t obey Him. Doing good deeds is not enough if we don’t believe in God. Even if we believe in God and do righteous deeds, our worship is in vain if our hearts are far from God. We can’t praise God if we don’t feel any affection towards him. Therefore, a Christian mission is to transform completely to become like Jesus. We need the right emotions, actions, and beliefs to help others grow towards our Christian mission!

Our Final Thoughts

When you obey, rely upon, and share Christ, you get drafted into God’s army! Your mission is to spread the gospel message and live a life that leads to eternal happiness. Your mission is to seek God’s love, follow Christ, and let the Holy Spirit transform your body and soul!
